The Sunday Best (9/15/2019)
The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated from the furthest reaches of the internet for your reading pleasure.
Every week, I scan hundreds of headlines, read dozens of posts, and bring you the best of the best to save you time and mental energy.
Financial Independence (FI) is a primary focus, but it’s an awfully broad topic. I tend to approach FI and early retirement from a fatFIRE perspective and through the lens of a physician, so expect to see those biases in the selected articles.
For more great articles, take a peek at The Sunday Best Archives. Now let’s get to the best… The Sunday Best!

The Happy Philosopher is not prolific, but his posts are profound. His latest shares 9 lessons designed to maximize both your freedom and happiness as a physician. How to Prepare for Life After Residency.

The Things Which May or May Not Happen
The financial news has been interesting to watch lately.
The yield curve has inverted. As a result, there might be a recession. Probably, but we don’t know when. Possibly yet this year. If not, likely next year or the year after. Unless this time, it’s different.
Index funds are in a bubble. And if that’s the case, actively managed funds are also in a bubble since they own the same stocks. Everything is overvalued, but bonds don’t pay squat, so what’s an investor to do?
Diversify into real estate! That’s the answer. Everyone needs a place to live and when’s the last time you heard of real estate losing half its value? Oh, yeah. 2008. And some places lost more than half. The Vanguard REIT index lost more than three quarters of its value.
There’s a lot of talk and little actionable advice in the financial media.
I haven’t made any substantial changes to my investments in the face of these headlines. The best move to make, if you haven’t made it yet, is to write out your investor policy statement so that you have a document to refer to when you or others question your current strategy.
Long story short: stay the course.
Diversify into Real Estate!
As I stated above, this is an optional move that has its own set of risks, but I will say that I’ve been impressed with some of the financially independent people I’ve met who are younger than me and have done it entirely with real estate.
I’m not looking for a second job, but I’ve toyed with the idea of becoming doubly financially independent by pursuing a real estate portfolio that would support our spending while keeping 25x or more invested in stocks and bonds.
How would one go about this?
My friend Chad Carson supercharged his real estate holdings by acquiring 33 properties in one year. That’s about one every 11 days for those keeping score at home.
How did he do it? I’ll let him tell you. 33 Real Estate Deals in One Year.
