While most of the hazing of residents seems to have abated, there is still an undercurrent of needing to be tough in order to thrive in medicine. I know that I subjected myself to this delusion for quite a few years before realizing that I needed to change to save myself, which I was able to do about a year ago. I no longer see patients, though I still have intellectual medical stimulation and pride in my work.
