PoF: Sunday Best

Greetings and Happy Easter from Naples, Florida! The sunshine is glorious down here.

This weekend is shaping up to be filled with classic Easter fun – we’ve got the eggs stuffed with goodies, the backyard is prepped for the hunt, and I’m even attempting a few ambitious Easter dishes (a huevos rancheros potato salad is what I am aiming for, wish me luck!).

What does your Easter Sunday look like? I hope it’s filled with joy and whatever brings you the most happiness.

Warmly,

Jorge Sanchez, MD

In the world of health: UnitedHealth’s stock plummeted 22% in Thursday morning trade following the earnings report, which CEO Andrew Witty called “frankly unusual and unacceptable” and “far from the performance we expected ourselves” in a morning call with investors.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took the unusual step of publicly contradicting one of his own agencies’ autism studies on Tuesday, suggesting at a press conference that “environmental factors” including drugs, not improved screening, were causing a spike in confirmed cases.

The Trump administration on Monday announced an investigation into drug imports in a likely precursor to tariffs, which the president has promised as a way to boost American production. The looming prospect of American tariffs on pharmaceuticals would likely hit generic drugmakers, which form 90% of prescriptions, the hardest.

From finance: The administration plans to eliminate the IRS’ Direct File program, an electronic system for filing tax returns directly to the agency for free. The program was credited by users for making tax filing easy, fast, and economical.

What women need to do differently with their money: how caregiving and longevity affect women’s investing plans, the role of guaranteed income, and the importance of a long-term-care plan.

For decades, 401(k)s have been a staple of US retirement savings, designed to sit as untouched nest eggs that workers build up for their golden years. However, that idea is starting to crack, as more and more Americans are tapping into their assets earlier and more often, sometimes just to get by.

Many Gen Zers and millennials are taking career breaks despite having relatively short careers. On social media, influencers have coined these breaks “micro-retirements” or “mini-retirements.” Rather than waiting until you’re retired to take an extended period off, micro-retirements involve taking multiple breaks that last many months throughout your career.

A different perspective: “Calls to live forever are perhaps misplaced, and we have evolved to die. Death is a good thing. A feature, not a bug. It allows for new life.” This is J. Paul Neeley on the longevity movement and what it means to live an optimized life.

We should accept that we’ll never be fully satisfied. We imagine that our next accomplishment will leave us happy forever, but then we end up moving the goal posts and targeting some new achievement. That’s just the way we humans are: We love to strive.

Easter is shaping up to be big this year — bigger baskets, bigger spending, and, unfortunately, bigger price tags. With egg prices up 41%, food inflation still nibbling away at budgets, and Easter arriving later than usual, 2025 is rewriting the rules on how Americans celebrate.
