The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated for your reading pleasure.
Expect most of the writing to be from recent weeks and consistent with the themes presented on this website: investing & taxes, financial independence, early retirement, and physician issues.
Presenting, this week’s Sunday Best:
I spoke to an ophthalmologist the other day without a single mention of the oculocardiac reflex. “Can you stop pushing on the eye? The heart rate’s 20 again.” No atropine was needed on this day when Dr. Jay Sridhar of the Retina Podcast and I had a pleasant conversation. Episode 153: Doctor Finances Discussion with Physician on FIRE.
I’ve got another podcast to share — this one features a bunch of docs who have graced The Sunday Best with their writing before, and now you get to hear their voices — some of them for the first time on a podcast, I believe. From What’s Up Next on DiverseFI is The Why of Dr. FI with KevinMD, Side Hustle Scrubs, Dr. McFrugal, and Crispy Doc.
One reason physicians pursue financial independence is to have a life of adventure that’s scarcely possible as a full-time doc. For example, check out this family of six as they traverse the world together. Big Family Small World says Show Me the Money! Six People, Six Months of Travel Expenses. Most of you spent more staying home.
How does one find this financial freedom? I’ve written extensively on the topic, and the Debt Free Dr. does a nice job breaking it down to one post. 7 Secrets To Financial Freedom Every Doctor Should Know.
Passive Income MD, an obstetric anesthesiologist, could afford not to don the scrubs at this point, but he’s not done poking backs yet. Why I Don’t Plan on Quitting Medicine Anytime Soon.
Sadly, some physicians are quitting medicine and life simultaneously. As anesthesiologists, patient safety is our number one objective. The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation reminds us that we also need to focus on Our Own Safety in an article penned by Dr. Jeffrey Huang and Anthony Brenner.
Practicing gratitude can help stave off burnout and improve your mindset. Ryan Inman of the Financial Residency reminds us that there’s a lot to be thankful for as a physician at any pay level. How Doctors with Lower Paying Specialties Can Stretch Their Money to Live Their Ideal Life.
The Financial Samurai tells an amusing tale to demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect in action. Essentially, it means people tend to think their abilities match other people’s abilities and vice versa, but Sam explains it much better. Is Delusion Ruining Your Life? Let’s Talk Dunning-Krueger.
Few people that don’t sell life insurance have learned as much about it as Dr. Jim Dahle. In fact, I’d argue that he understands it better than most that do sell it. He continues his excellent no-holds-barred myth-busting on The White Coat Investor with  Myths of Whole Life Insurance Part 7.
Four Pillar Freedom can work a spreadsheet like nobody’s business. Visualizing the Best & Worst Investment Periods in History.
I gave an honest review of the latest FIRE books in Financial Freedom for Generation X — as I stated on Twitter, if I keep writing reviews like this, authors might stop sending me free books! But honesty is, after all, the best policy.
My lawyer pal Kevin (did I just say lawyer pal?!?) took a turn as the latest interviewee in Christopher Guest Post: Financial Panther. With a million pageviews on his site last year, he’s clearly doing something right!
Yesterday’s Saturday Selection from The White Coat Investor covered an important topic for do-it-yourself investors. Rebalancing Your Portfolio: Why, When, and How.
See You at the FI Summit?
Early next month, I’m excited to be part of an online Financial Independence Summit with some of the leaders in this space, and I look forward to being both a presenter and a participant to see what my fellow speakers have to say.
I’ll be joined by none other than Mr. Money Mustache, Brad from ChooseFI, Gwen from the FIRE Drill Podcast, Jillian of Montana Money Adventures, and The Thrifty Couple.
The dates are March 5, 6, and 7, and talks will be given from 7pm to 9pm Eastern time.
Registration will set you back $29 or $49 and you can get 10% off with discount code POF. I’ll receive a referral fee and you’d be supporting our charitable mission. You can learn more here.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is my top pick for your first rewards card. Welcome bonus of 60,000 points worth at least $750 when used to book travel (after a $4,000 spend in 3 mo) and other great perks you can learn about here.
See You in Arizona?
We may summit a few small peaks, but I won’t make you hike with me. I’m heading to Arizona with my family this week, and I’ll be sneaking out for a couple of meetups organized by others.
First, there’s a FinCon local meetup for any of you online content creators in the Phoenix area on Tuesday, February 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Elevate Coworking, located at 4568 E Cactus Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032. I hear there will be beer and tacos. Mmmm…. beer and tacos….
Second, for physicians on Social Media, the #SoMe Docs will be meeting up on Thursday, February 21st at 6pm at Pomo Pizzeria, located at 8977 North Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ. Mmm… pizza (and presumably beer)…
Finally, after a few days exploring Flagstaff, Sedona, and the Grand Canyon, we’ll be hunkering down in Tucson for an anesthesia meeting straddling the end of February and early March, getting home just in time for the aforementioned online FI Summit.
If you’re in Tucson, consider joining my family and me and a handful of thirsty anesthesia residents for a happy hour (or two) on Thursday, February 28th at 5 p.m. at Sentinel Peak Brewing. They’ve got some great food and beer specials before 6 p.m. and a deal on their famous mac and cheese varieties after 6 o’clock. Mmm… beer and buffalo mac…
Have an outstanding week!
