The Sunday Best

The Sunday Best
The Sunday Best is a collection of articles I’ve curated for your reading pleasure.

Expect most of the writing to be from recent weeks and consistent with the themes presented on this website: investing & taxes, financial independence, early retirement, and physician issues.

Presenting, this week’s Sunday Best:

Happy Birthday to me. Happy Birthday to me. Happy Birthday Physician on FIIIIIIRRRRRRRE. Happy Birthday to me! Today I celebrate 43. The last year I can legitimately claim I’m in my early forties.

I celebrated with a few beers with friends — that’s a few more drinks than I had all of last month. In a guest post at ESI Money, I describe A Sober October: The Impact of Abstinence on My Waistline and Wallet.

Have you ever noticed a connection between the discipline required to eat well and spend prudently? Joe Udo from Retire by 40 explores the commonalities in How to Avoid Overspending and Overeating.

I’m not expecting many gifts for my birthday. I don’t want many things; I’m happy to have the experience of celebrating with family and friends. It makes me happy. Mr. 1500 argues that Happiness Isn’t About Experiences Either. Huh?

Well if things don’t make us happy and experiences don’t make us happy, then what (besides beer) actually does? Being mindful? From High Plains Drifter MD, Mindfulness and the FIRE Movement.

I’ve got my mind on my money and my money on my mind. Just like this other Semi Retired MDHow Our Real Estate Portfolio Generates 25% Plus Return (THE 25%+ Solution).

How does one calculate real estate returns? There are several ways, and Passive Income MD compares and contrasts two of the more popular calculations. Understanding Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Equity Multiple (EM) in Real Estate Investing.

Can you work those numbers to come up with a fatFIRE portfolio worth $5 Million? That’s a lot of money, says Mr. Waffles on Wednesday. Yes, it is. $5MM is a Scary Number.

Friends and Family

I didn’t exactly tell people I was celebrating my birthday, but I’ve been celebrating all weekend long.

On Friday, I celebrated with my blogging friends. I met up with Mr. Apathy Ends, the Financial Panther and his lovely wife, and Erik from The Mastermind Within. We clinked glasses, enjoyed some pizza, and played a little pool. A good time was had by all.

Yesterday, I celebrated with my college friends. I had a tasty breakfast with a couple of them, met up with a couple more at a football game, and I got to meet the very young sons of a guy I’ve been friends with for 25 years. Although I would have preferred a different outcome in the game, it was a great day.

Today, I’ll celebrate with my family. I am grateful for all of the wonderful people in my life, but especially the select few that live under the same roof as me. I feel incredibly fortunate to be living this life with this loving family.

To the next 43 and more!

  1. Thanks for the mention! I’m intermittent fasting and it’s working pretty well. I lost 10 lbs over 2 months. The weight has stabilized now and I’m pretty happy at this point.
    Thanks for the mention!

  3. Thanks for inviting me out to the brewery this weekend! Lots of fun. Too bad the Gophers couldn’t get it done, otherwise would have been an A+ weekend 🙂

  4. Happy 43rd!

I’m glad you enjoyed Story Time. I’m sure you’ve experienced the same thing, but it usually turns out that the posts I have the most fun writing are the ones that trigger the most response from readers. Your boys are growing up quick, so you better read them these Dr. Seuss rewrites while you still can.

    Thanks again for sharing!

  5. When I was 43 I was just getting out of the Navy, and starting my real career. Looks like you’re doing the same maneuver at your age 43. HBD!

  6. Happy birthday! I still think 44 could qualify you for early 40s and 45-46 mid 40s. At 47 I’m mired in the late 40s.

I loved the side hustle scrubs Dr Seuss take on children’s finance books. The book covers looked legit.

Enjoy the rest of your birthday and enjoy beginning the next stage in your life

  8. I agree with much of the Mr 1500 post regarding happiness, but not this excerpt:

“Know that FIRE (or other external circumstances) probably won’t cure your problems. Reading something like this always makes me cringe:

I have just 384 more days until I quit work! I can’t wait!

Again, I know from experience why this is a bad idea. When I left work, I thought that I’d be instantly happier. And then it didn’t happen:”

Wrong. When I left practice about 18 years ago I became much, much happier — instantly — and not because of what I “retired” to, but because of what I escaped from.

If you have a burning cigarette pressed firmly against your cheek, you will become instantly happier when it is removed.

  9. Happy, happy birthday friend! Hope you had an amazing week long celebration. I also quite like the people that live under your roof, have fun today. Oh and thanks for the shout out!

  10. Happy Birthday! Hope I’m doing as well as you in 10 years. I made it through a “Sober-two-and-a-half-weeks-in-October”. Always good to have room for improvement…

    • Yeah, I fixed it this morning but the front page hadn’t refreshed. I just cleared the cache, which should take care of it.

Apparently, I’m no wiser at 43 than I was at 42.

      Cheers!
