The Sunday Best (12/08/2024)

PoF: Sunday Best

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Sunday Best, where we explore the enduring dominance of U.S. financial markets and the globalized nature of our diets, despite the emphasis on local consumption. This issue also investigates the demographic shifts in retirement communities and the myths surrounding college savings.

We examine the impact of part-time work in retirement, offering strategies for financial stability without early withdrawal from savings. Our coverage extends to philosophical insights on life’s unavoidable “taxes” and the ongoing debate about AI consciousness.

As we navigate the economy, stay tuned for our market insights amid economic policy shifts and remember Art Cashin’s influential legacy in a special tribute.

The United States is the envy of the world in terms of financial markets and economic performance. Find out why U.S. markets are swallowing the rest of the world.

Despite decades of admonitions from nutritionists and environmentalists to “eat locally, think globally,” our collective diets are more international than ever.

The anti-foreign-stock drumbeat has grown louder with each additional year that international markets underperform U.S. shares. Before you throw in the towel, ask yourself six questions about foreign investments.

Communities across the country, particularly those that are popular among retirees, are seeing an influx of older residents as a “silver tsunami” — based on population rather than housing inventory — prepares to wash over them.

An urban legend states colleges withhold money if parents accumulate assets. Yes, and mostly no. Discover the myth of college savings.

Part-time work in retirement might mean the difference between living scared and on the edge or funding experiences during the early part of your golden years while you hold off drawing down your retirement savings.

It’s never too late. Life can be long, and success can come at any age. There’s a bias towards thinking early success is a good thing because it’s notable enough to be in newspapers and on television shows.

“All the things which cause complaint or dread are like the taxes of life — things from which, my dear Lucilius, you should never hope for exemption or seek escape.” Here are the ten taxes of life you need to pay for growth and fulfillment.

The author of the seminal book about loneliness explains what we’re getting wrong

Nearly 25 years after Robert Putnam’s Bowling Alone, Americans are more socially isolated than ever.

Will AI ever become conscious? It depends on how you think about biology. The debate that will steer the future of consciousness — and us.

Don’t miss our Monday Market reviews: In the weeks ahead, markets are brimming with opportunities as President-elect Trump’s emerging tariff threats fuel uncertainty in global supply chains.

And lastly, a fitting tribute to a great man: Remembering Art Cashin.

Let’s Reconnect!

I remember that conferences were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Traveling to get the latest guidelines included personal risk. However, we figured it all out. Zoom came along, and bam! we were in the virtual world. Personal contact was no longer the norm.

The result was that I got to see my physician friends far less. There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated feelings of loneliness and social isolation among healthcare workers. This fragmentation is further worsened by the fragmentation of healthcare where physicians meet less often. Everyone is in a hurry to see their patients and get home.

For me, the chance to socialize with fellow physicians is much harder than ever. That’s why attending conferences is more important than ever. It’s not just about the latest research or clinical guidelines; it’s about reconnecting with colleagues, forging new relationships, and sharing experiences.

Conferences offer a unique opportunity to:

  • Network with peers: Connect with like-minded professionals, share ideas, and collaborate on projects.
  • Socialize and relax: Take a break from the daily grind and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues.
  • Gain new perspectives: Learn from experts in your field and broaden your knowledge base.

But why stop there?

Join us at the Prosperity Conference and take your journey to the next level. This isn’t just an event; it’s an opportunity to:

  • Learn from physician leaders and experts about how to make more money on your journey to FIRE
  • Connect with a community of like-minded individuals.
  • Grow your wealth, health, and relationships.
  • Transform your life and career.

Mark your calendars: March 6-8, 2025, in Las Vegas, NV.

Reserve your seat now and embark on a journey to abundant wealth, vibrant health, and deeper connections.

By attending conferences like Prosperity, you can not only enhance your professional development but also improve your mental and emotional well-being.

So, let’s reconnect as physicians and rediscover the power of human connection.
